Our History

The Full Story

Our story begins in 1969. Alice Johannsen, the daughter of “Jack Rabbit” Johannsen known for his cross-
country skiing prowess, was teaching a course called “Outdoor Explorers at McGill. She was the director
of the McGill’s Redpath Museum, the only woman at the time to hold such a position in North America.
David Sewell, the museum’s curator was given the job of organizing weekend outings for the students in
the class. This led to the formation of the Field Naturalist Club of the Redpath Museum. In 1971 when
McGill could no longer provide support for the club the members reorganized and established the
Montreal Field Naturalists Club.

The club has been operating continuously since 1971. A memory book was published to celebrate the
50th anniversary of the founding in 2021 which can be obtained for free from this website. The club is
managed by an executive consisting of the following: president, treasurer, secretary, membership,
communications and program. Outdoor activities are held one or two times a month and general
meetings with speakers about 6 times a year. These have been held at many locations over the years but
always in downtown Montreal. At present they are held in Fulford Hall on Union Street. We also
celebrate Christmas and hold the annual meeting in local restaurants.

Club Objectives

To provide an opportunity for people interested in the natural world to meet, exchange ideas and hear
talks on nature

To sponsor field trips, nature walks and hikes for members so that they may be exposed to and study
various aspects of the environment.

To foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the environment and to serve, wherever possible,
as a concerned voice in the conservation of our natural heritage.
